What do flashing battery charger lights mean?

Light patterns vary by charger model. Identify the charger first, then compare the exact pattern with its manufacturer manual before replacing a battery or charger.

Independent reference. ToolBattery is not a manufacturer or authorized service center. Model revision, region, condition and the latest manual may change the answer. Do not use an unapproved adapter or modified battery.

Start with the charger’s model

A red light on one brand can mean something different on another. Makita documents DC18RC light states in its FAQ; DEWALT manuals describe a separate hot/cold delay pattern. Read the model number on the physical charger rather than using a generic chart.

Allow for temperature delays

Some chargers pause when a pack is too hot or cold. DEWALT explains that charging resumes after the pack reaches an appropriate temperature. Do not heat or chill a pack by improvised methods to defeat the delay.

Stop for damage or persistent faults

If the case is damaged, leaking, smoking or abnormally hot, stop using it and follow the manufacturer safety instructions. If the pattern persists in normal conditions, use official support for that charger and pack.
