Does 20V MAX mean it works with every 18V tool?

No. On DEWALT’s 20V MAX products, 20V is the maximum initial voltage and 18V is nominal. That labeling relationship is not a universal connector or compatibility standard.

Independent reference. ToolBattery is not a manufacturer or authorized service center. Model revision, region, condition and the latest manual may change the answer. Do not use an unapproved adapter or modified battery.

Voltage labels describe measurement

DEWALT explains the maximum and nominal values on its product information. Two products can share an electrical voltage label yet have different mechanical keys, electronics, protections and manufacturer approvals.

Use a specific compatibility table

For DCD805, DEWALT’s instruction manual lists DCB205 among the compatible packs. That pair is supported because of the manual, not because both labels can be read as 18V.

Keep other brands separate

Makita LXT, Milwaukee M18 and Bosch Professional 18V are independent systems. Never use the nominal-voltage relationship to turn a cross-brand combination into a positive result.
